Message from Mrs Birch

Mrs Birch
Mrs Birch - Headteacher

This week, the Astronomy Roadshow came to school as children from Year 5 and 6 all completed sessions in a mobile planetarium. There was much excitement about the huge dome in the middle of the school hall and I know the children enjoyed the experience and were able to talk about their learning. This was to support their learning in Science, which we continue to raise the profile of. As you know from last week’s newsletter, we are holding a whole school Science afternoon (with the exception of Year 3 who are on a school trip) on Monday 14th October. Parents are welcome to join us, to see the learning that has been completed, from 2:45pm.

Parent Online Safety Workshop

Just a reminder that we have experts in online safety coming into school on Monday (30th September) to deliver a parent workshop for you. The workshop takes places at 9am and will give you lots of tips about supporting your child in staying safe online. We hope that lots of parents are able to join us.

Open Classrooms

A reminder that our first Open Classrooms of the year is taking places on Thursday 3rd October at 3:15pm to 3:45pm. We hope many of you are able to take the opportunity to come and look at your child’s learning.

Biggest Girls’ Football Tournament

I want to say a huge well done to our girls from Years 5 and 6, who all participated in the biggest girls’ football tournament this week. I have had so much positive feedback from the staff who attended and it sounds as if all of the girls represented Team Galley Hill extremely well.

Staff News

Another huge well done goes to Mrs Orton, who successfully completed her Higher Level Teaching Assistant course this week. We are very proud of her for the hard work she put in so that she could achieve this and look forward to seeing her taking classes soon.

Reception/Year 1 Phonics Open Morning

On Friday 25th October, 9-10am, we would like to invite all parents/carers of children in Reception and Year 1 to a phonics open morning, where you will get a chance to watch your child's phonics lesson in their classroom, learn about our phonics scheme and how we teach it, and gain some ideas in how you can support your child with their reading at home. If you would like to attend, you do not need to do anything, just drop your child off at school as normal on the day then come round to the school office. We look forward to seeing you!

PINS Parent/Carer Meeting

Save the date: Parent/carer meeting  Friday 11th October 8.55am to 10.25am.

We are participating in a project run by the local area called 'Partnerships for inclusion of Neurodiversity in Schools (PINS)'. The project involves supporting schools to develop their knowledge for how to support neurodiverse children in schools.

Lynn Turnbull from Hertfordshire Parent Carer Forum will be holding a parent meeting at Galley Hill School on Friday 11th October 8.55am to 10.25am. This is open to all parent/ carers in our school community. Lynn is looking forward to meeting you and hearing your thoughts, experiences and ideas.

Please come along, she will also provide tea, coffee and biscuits!

Wet weather and lunch times

As we appear to now officially be in Autumn, children will need to bring in a pair of wellies if they wish to play on the field or in the woodlands at lunch time. These need to be brought in a bag and can stay at school on your child's peg. Children will also need to bring to school a waterproof coat with them every day - as we like to get outside whatever the weather! Thank you.

World Mental Health Day

On Thursday 10th October Galley Hill will be participating in World Mental Health Day, by holding class assemblies, discussions and completing a range of activities. We will also be raising awareness by joining in with YoungMinds' Hello Yellow Campaign. We are therefore inviting each child to come into school on that day wearing something yellow, on top of their usual school uniform, e.g. a pair of socks, a scarf, hairband, jumper etc. Staff will be getting involved as well! We look forward to seeing you.

Consent Forms on Arbor

If you have logged on to Arbor in the last day or 2 you may notice that there are a number of consent requests that pop up on your home screen. Please can you ensure that these consents are all up to date. Also, if any of your information has changed (phone number, email address etc.) then these can be updated on the app and will be approved in the office.
